Adobe has released a preview of its new design tool, Edge, that takes advantage of the new features of HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS3. The new tool could become a big hit given the great features and flexibility it has.

The tool focuses on creating motions which gives a flash-like feel to websites. The tool supports SVG, PNG, JPG, and GIF files. It allows animation of position, size, shape, rotation, and other aspects. And the tool allows for copying, pasting, and inverting transitions and comes with 25 motion easing effects. Perhaps the best part is that it can add the animations without modifying the existing HTML documents or the CSS templates.

An article at Computerworld has some great points about this new product. As the article mentions, HTML5 is being used more and more to accomplish what a lot of what flash and even desktop applications do. Though flash has been very popular, it is not supported on some platforms and can be rather buggy, as Apple's CEO Steve Jobs pointed out. Adobe does not plan to replace Flash with Edge, at least in the near future, according to an Adobe product manager, Devin Fernandez.

Adobe's new program is certainly an answer to the growing trend of the use of HTML5. Edge is now available for free downloading on Windows and Mac and will release a complete pay-for version next year. Time will tell whether or not Edge, or programs like it, will move ahead of other web-based IDEs.
